Born in 1941 in Kanagawa, Japan, he is an influential Japanese designer recognized for his imaginative and artistic approach to furniture design.His works are celebrated for their poetic forms, emotional depth, and sculptural beauty, blurring the boundaries between design and art while transforming functional objects into expressive symbols of nature, emotion, and culture. 

After graduating from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1962, he worked in Milan with Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and later joined Studio Alchimia and the Memphis Group, movements that redefined postmodern design in the 1980s.

Umeda’s creations, including the Rose Chair and Getsuen Chair for Edra, embody his unique ability to fuse Eastern symbolism with Western craftsmanship.

His works are celebrated for their poetic forms, emotional depth, and sculptural beauty, blurring the boundaries between design and art while transforming functional objects into expressive symbols of nature, emotion, and culture.
