Alessandro Mendini
Born in 1931 in Milan, Italy, Alessandro Mendini was a pioneering architect, designer, and artist who became a central figure in the Postmodern design movement. His work redefined traditional boundaries, blending art, design, and architecture in innovative ways. Mendini was a key member of Studio Alchimia and later Memphis Group, where he collaborated with other renowned designers to challenge the minimalist aesthetics of Modernism. His designs often featured bold colors, eclectic forms, and a playful use of materials, reflecting his philosophy that design should evoke emotion and storytelling.
One of his most iconic creations is the Proust Armchair, a hand-painted piece that merges historical elegance with contemporary vibrancy. Mendini also collaborated with prestigious brands like Venini, where he designed timeless glass collections such as the Acco Vases.
“For a long time I dreamed of an object capable of expressing fondness, distance, the mysteries and senses of the proud elegance of Italian art. The ultimate synthesis of our artistic past, I told myself, is to be found in the person of Giotto. The lightness of Italian art is expressed by faces that stare into the distance, angels with polychromatic wings, and clear blue skies. ‘Giotto’ was created with respect and love and has since become an emblem of Venini glass art. With its austere face, it represents the legendary artist in a key that is both modern and ancient, strong yet fragile. A winged figure, watching us watching him. From the slits of his alien eyes, this sensitive figure seems to exude magical power in support of the future of Italian art.” — Alessandro Mendini
